Here is a little thing that I tried to confirm.

->I created a blank AS3 Flash Document
->Created a rectangle and converted it to a MovieClip
->gave it an instance name ‘rect’
->created a new layer and added a dynamic textfield called ‘txt’ that overlaps the rect mc.

Then I added this to the first frame (we are just testing, so need of a Document Root)

rect.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onClick);
rect.buttonMode = true;

txt.text = ‘overlapping text’;
txt.mouseEnabled = false;

function onClick(e):void
{
trace(‘hello world’);
}

This worked. If you are doing something similar and it still doesn’t work, then the problem could be some other overlapping (probably invisible) movie clip. In an earlier project I had faced a similar problem when the timeline had many layers with animated movieclips. One of the movie clip faded out and landed on top of a button partially and created similar problems. It took some time to realize this minor issue. (I enabled the outlines mode to see this overlapping invisible element). Maybe something similar could be happening in your project?
